April 2026 movie/music/etc recap
Movie
The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
I love Wes Andersen and his movies so much
I love how his characters are all flawed and sometimes even detestable but you end up caring for them anyway. And every scene is a delight to watch, as always, with great composition and colors.
Clair de lune was an a++ choice; actually a lot of songs were really well picked! I don't like commercial songs in films most of the time but they were used so well in this. Ending the movie with Les Champs-Elysées was a lovely touch, too.
The Vast of Night (2019)
I could say the weakest point of this little gem of a movie is that the plot is a bit simple, but that's pretty much the only average thing about it (and I frankly don't even consider it bad at all). The whole thing was a pleasure to look at/listen to!
I loved the two protagonists, Jake Horowitz and Sierra McCormick were incredible in this! As a french speaking person, it was nice listening to them talk that old american accent and their conversations were great. I just plain loved hearing people talk in this movie, and the director knew that because having a black screen at some point for like a minute while someone is telling a story is a risky gamble but it definitely paid off in this case.
In the same way, some shots are pretty long; the transversal shot from the operator's office to the gym court to the radio station was a really nice moment to experience. Also loved how the obscurity/light were played with during the entire movie.
It's a movie that takes time to breathe and I liked that a lot. I definitely recommend it!
Street Fighter (1994)
Saw the trailer for the new movie, got cautiously hyped and then remembered I've never watched the old one in its entirety.
And yeah it's campy, there's not enough fighting for a street fighter movie but it was a fun time anyway!
Absolutely loved Raul's Bison, and it was nice to see JCVD and Kylie Minogue. Pretty much the whole cast was fun tbh (Zangief's "You got paid?" was great!).
TV Show
The Pitt, season 2
With the last episode aired, this season is now finished, and it was as good as the first one! I'm not going to say much about it because it's a fresh season, but I liked how the new attending started first on my nerves (especially with her being an AI shill) and as the season progressed she got more humane and relatable. Langdon's return to the ER was well written. There were some great patient stories, too! And the whole thing with Robby's last day before his sabbatical was absolutely great. There's a ton of other things that was awesome during this but I don't want to spoil so I'm going to end it here.
It was a great season and I can't wait for the next one!
Squid Game
It's a good show but I got out of it not understanding why it got so popular to be honest. (Battle Royale did it better 20 years ago! But it was indeed pretty popular back in the days so I guess it's the same reasons why this series is, too.)
There were too many little clichés adding up to know what would happen in the end, even the big twist of the first season wasn't one because, well, it was the only one not shown on screen. (iykyk)
This being said, I still enjoyed quite a few things from this, some games were pretty cool and there were quite a bunch of interesting characters! (But NOT the VIPs, they were annoying at best and a waste of time/commentary at worst.) I enjoyed the second and third seasons, too, there was a definite glow up to pretty much everything compared to the first one. But yeah, even if the overall story is pretty good, this was an okay-ish show for me.
Music
I've been getting myself up to date with the latest uploads of OCReMixes from the last 6 months or so, and as usual there has been some really great tracks! Notably:
- Donkey Kong Country 2 OC ReMix - WillRock & more: "Dawn Chorus" [Forest Interlude]
- Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask OC ReMix - LXE: "Healing Termina" [Song of Healing] ; this one is a long and beautiful journey
- Undertale OC ReMix - Lucas Guimaraes: "Asgore in Wonderland" [ASGORE]
- Bomberman Hero OC ReMix - Ridiculously Garrett: "Snowboarding Through a Mine Field" [Redial]
And from 1001 Albums, got some great bangers this month:
- Stardust by Willie Nelson
- Machine Head by Deep Purple
- Bitches Brew by Miles Davis
- Emergency On Planet Earth by Jamiroquai
- Smash by The Offspring
- Pearl by Janis Joplin (forgot she had such a great voice!)
- What's Going On by Marvin Gaye
- The Gershwin Songbook by Ella Fitzgerald (haven't listened to the whole thing (it's 3 hours long) but it was such a lovely listen!)
Youtube
The Horror of Being Born by Daryl Talks Games is a great video about, well, how birth, babies and the likes are used in horror games. Really good!
Also you should watch anything from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology if you like birds!
