August 2025 recap
A bit busy and really tired, so my little reviews will be mid at best whoops
Movie
KPop Demon Hunters (2025)
Trying it out again and ignoring the expressions as much as i can! I think I would enjoy them more if everyone didn't look as plastic-y as they do. The most interesting thing visually speaking for me is still the demons' designs, they're so well done.
There's an obvious capitalist side to this movie that I genuinely dislike a lot. The humor is really good though, and the tiger/magpie duo is the best thing (despite their stupid name) of the movie. The songs were pretty cool but incredibly mainstream. Bobby is an angel of a manager!
I think I would have enjoyed it more if it was in a tv show format, to be honest. There's a lot of stuff that would have had a bigger impact if we had more time getting to know the main characters. There's also quite a few stuff left unanswered like the people whose soul has been taken, what happened to them/have they been found, etc.
Despite all of that I still enjoyed it a lot, it's still an original movie lost in a sea of sub par franchises and I'm glad it was a hit, especially in a world populated with more and more GenAI shit. It's the kind of movies that show you have to have humans working on it from A to Z because of the connections you can make to them through it, and it's not something you can get from prompts.
The Living Daylights (1987)
Loved Timothy Dalton's Bond! Can't wait to see him in the next movie. It was a nice one, definitely nicer than the last of Moore's.
As someone whose main Bond movie was Goldeneye, it was fun seeing Don Baker as a villain. Kara was pretty cool, but it felt as if they wanted to go opposite to the previous Bond girls and made her a bit too competent on some stuff. I liked the scenes with the mujahidin, they were pretty fun.
Pretty cool movie! And a nice change of pace from the last ones.
Redline (2009)
The style!!!! The animation!!!! It was just so GOOD!!! There's a tactile feel to it that is just chef's kiss, just incredible.
The suspense was a++ during the races, I loved it. The characters were really cool. The end is a tiny bit meh to my taste but is in line with that movie and with the time it got out so heh, it was good enough.
Still a masterpiece! Every one should take the time to watch it, especially if you're a fan of F-Zero, ahah
Ostinato (2024)
Animated short about music and tinnitus (I wasn't feeling well for a "big" movie). It was a bit painful (the high pitched tone) but really sweet, loved the retro style!
Gallowwalkers (2012)
It's a bit of a "nanar" as we call them in french ("a film so bad it's good") but I still really enjoyed it! I took it more like a dark fairytale set in the West and it was pretty good at that, which isn't the opinion of a lot of people, from what I've seen. But then again, Wesley Snipe being badass = Blade, so this movie got compared a lot on that basis, which is a bit of a shame, I think.
The cinematography is chef's kiss most of the time, really enjoyed a lot of shots and landscapes.
The female cast is pretty much forgettable sadly, aside of Jenny Gago's character ; everything is about the menβ’ otherwise, like the main reason why Aman is on the hunt. \
