June 2026 movie/music/etc recap
Not to add to the Europeans complaining about the heatwave pile but fucking hell that was a shitty time to live through, even if I'm lucky because we didn't have the worst temp where I live (the highest we got was around 37°C). I'm just glad it didn't last longer because the house was slowly but surely picking up the heat and the walls started to get warm when it stopped. But at least this morning I got to wake up to a nice little storm and that was really refreshing.
Anyway, July means Artfight! AKA the only month where I really draw stuff!! Yay!!! And SGDQ is soon too!!!
Movie
The Fall Guy (2024)
Damn that was a fun movie! The plot might be a bit simple overall but it works, and everything is so extra in this, I just loved it. It's a really fun action movie with a bunch of chaotic scenes, always trying to go up to eleven, and it worked really well for me! Oh, and the fight scene at the club? So fucking good, the visual effects were incredible. Overall the action scenes were excellent - which, duh, considering the basis of the movie.
Loved the chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, loved how much of an asshole Aaron Taylor is. Loved the dog, too! The rest of the cast was awesome.
Le Sommet des Dieux / The Summit of the Gods (2021)
I'll have to read the manga one day, because that animated movie was incredible.
The art is absolutely gorgeous and the alpine scenery is drawn so beautifully, you can really see the effort put into the mountains and it only makes the ascensions better. There were many scenes where I found myself stressed for Habu and his companions, be it Buntaro or Fukumachi, with how much you could feel the vertigo? There's a real sense of hugeness, and the hardship is only magnified with how everything is drawn and shown on screen. Also, the visual effects with Fukumachi during the Everest ascension with Habu were terrifying and so well done. What a great movie!
Oh and the end is just, a++ no notes. I couldn't have imagined another finish to this film.
Show
Twin Peaks (the whole thing, with the movie too)
Finally, FINALLY, took the time to watch this! It's been on my backlog for years.
It was an interesting show that I would most likely never recommend around friends and colleagues unless I know they like weird stuff, but I really liked it. I can see why it made so many waves, it's such an ovni of a TV series, full of quirky characters that you get to enjoy even if some seem stupid or w/e at first. It has such a different feel even today compared to other TV shows, and i can't imagine the impact it had back in the days (I mean, you can see it through all the media inspired by it, but the impact as it was at the moment I can't imagine).
Cooper is a gem of a man, I loved every one at the police station, and if some characters could get a bit on my nerves, they all mostly got redeemed by the third season (Bobby could be a bit of a (still likeable) hit or miss to me, but I loved where his character went in the 3rd, and like, the love between him and his father? a++ ow my heart). There was a real feeling of community in that show that you don't see as genuine? anywhere else.
Speaking of seasons, the first is great, the third is really fucking good and the second is a bit meh - though it is understandable when you know about the fact that it shouldn't have been this long, but this being said there were some questionable sidestories in there that made me go "???" as well.
The movie Firewalk With Me was also a great addition, as it shows more of Laura's side of things and oh my god the poor babe
On a more personal note, as a huge Nine Inch Nails fan, seeing Trent Reznor&Co in the third season followed by one of the best scenes of the whole show was awesome.
The Amazing Digital Circus
Didn't think I'd watch this show (except for a few fun designs, it didn't seem the kind of stuff I like, despite the whole computer interfacing bit that I love), but it's one of the next month recommandations from Versus Wolves, so I decided to watch it.
And it was pretty good. There were a few things from the first episodes that I liked (like what happens with Gummigoo) but there was a bit of a procedural tint to these eps that made it a tiny bit boring? Which made me a bit heh at first. But then the last couple of episodes start to make it really interesting! And... it ended too quickly for me. And the IRL side of it didn't click either. Oh well.
I still enjoyed most characters, with Pomni, Jax and Caine as the most interesting ones, and the plot was engaging but fell a bit short for me. There was also a bit of... not therapy talk, but characters were too wordy about their feelings in a way that almost took me out of it. (Maybe not enough of the "show, don't tell" principle for these moments? I don't know)
But yeah, it was ok. The animation was really good tho! No complain on that side from me.
This being said, Gooseworx did a really good job despite my criticisms, and it's always really cool to see indie animation!
Music
The usual albums I liked from 1001 Albums:
- Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C. (a classic!)
- Innervisions by Stevie Wonder
- Swordfishtrombones by Tom Waits (my beloved)
- Timeless by Goldie
- The Wall by Pink Floyd
I also finally took the time to listen to Hesitation Marks by Nine Inch Nails in its entirety and I had a great time (especially loved Copy of a). It's funny how I just felt right at home with this album, there has been a constant evolution with Trent's music but I'm glad to see it still hits the right notes for me. Ever since the hiatus from around 2011 I didn't really followed up what Trent was up to, and it's nice to see that I have quite a bunch of new albums to listen! And two new Ghosts too!
I just need to find the time to listen to them properly, which is always the worst thing for me. I have the same problem when someone recommends me something, I need to get into the right mood to watch/listen/read/play it. I guess I see it as a show of a minimum of respect towards the person but it's a pain in the butt to find the time.
Another album I listened to was TOP SPOT - ANOTHER DIMENSION by T.O.P, and what a joy it is to hear that dude's voice again! Really fun album to listen to.
