March 2026 movie/music/links recap

Movie

Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

Realized I've never watched it and I had to correct that! I've always enjoyed seeing the many gifs of the landlady on the internet, I can't believe it took me that much time to see the actual movie.
I don't have much to say, it's a really good old kung-fu comedy with some funny CGI here and there that doesn't take you out of it. The scenario isn't incredible but it's more than good enough for what this movie is.
Shoutout to the fight with the harpists! It was so cool!

Trafic (1976)

It's been a while (like 20+yrs?) since I last watched one of Jacques Tati's movies and wanted to see one again, so I went with Trafic.
I forgot how good he was at social commentary (not that I would have realized it when I was a kid) with just how he shows inane gestures like the nose picking, the people opening/closing car doors, etc. The way he showed the absurdity of modern life with simple shots and repetition is just chef's kiss
Maria PR is great with her constant change of clothes and audacity. The fact that she's the source of quite a lot of problems was really funny too! Like the crash she caused; the silent-ish scene thereafter with just the bird singing is a++, and the people dealing with it (notably the ones looking for car parts like they were looking for a lost dog) is peak.
It might not be his funniest but still a really good movie by Tati!

The Menu (2022)

Saw some people say it was pretentious and all that, and I can see a bit why, but it's still a pretty damn good movie. I had a good time watching it. The story is serviceable, most of the characters just barely touch the line of the cliché they represent and the visuals were pretty damn good.
Tyler was as annoying as he should have been, Margot's rebuttal was a++ and Slowik was a great character in itself. I like how the only meal that looked actually delicious was the last one (which was kind of the point, but I wanted to say it anyway).

War Machine (2026)

I wanted to see a dumb action movie, this one just got out, so there it is.
The first half of the movie was cultist military propaganda bullshit but it was expected. The rest of it was fiiiine, with some stuff where you had to hold up really hard onto your suspension of disbelief to buy it.
One little thing I enjoyed is the fact that you see military deal with stuff without weapons; but there's also the fact that military is inherently boring maneuvers most of the time as well, and the suspenseful music in some scenes doesn't land and only reiterate that point.
The war machine was a tiny bit boring when you know the universe of Metal Gear, but some stuff were really fun, like the sphere grenades were pretty cool and made for some nice explosions.
I wouldn't recommend this movie unless you like braindead action stuff but it was still pretty okaaaay. This being said, thank you Netflix for making stuff with the biggest foreshadowing ever right out of the gate in the first minutes, and then the repetitive NASA news in the background, which made the whole movie kind of a flat line all the way when it came to the general plot.
But I like watching Alan Ritchson doing action stuff, sue me lol

Bonjour Switzerland (2023)

Pretty fun movie!
I guess for this one a little summary of it is needed (you could argue that I should do this for every movie I talk about here but I'm too lazy): in Switzerland, a votation to make the country monolingual is voted, and unexplicably of the 4 national languages, french wins it. Chaos ensues!
The one thing I didn't really enjoyed was that the main protagonist was a cop, but aside of that, it was a good comedy. And as someone living in the french part of Switzerland, it was pretty funny to see all the Schwyzerdütsch people panicking when they realized they had to learn french. (I'd be too if I was to learn swiss german, to be honest, despite the fact that I spent 9 years learning german in school.)
Really enjoyed the multi linguistical side of it, it was nice hearing french, swiss german and italian together (with a side or romansh)!
