October 2025 movie/music recap
Quick recap time!
Also, I followed the monthly recommendations of Versus Wolves, which were the animated show The Boondocks (which was a rewatch for me ; forgot how much that show was unhinged but I had a good time watching it again), both versions of The Shining, and the Room 237 documentary - which I had to stop at some point because it was exhausting and a clear case of "Let's find a meaning why the curtains are blue and why it's linked to the moon's landing". (You can listen/watch the podcast episode about these here!)
Movie
Fast Five (2011)
It was nice to see Mia in a more active role (even though yes, she's pregnant - it was still nice to see more of her, she's a cool character). Dom's "Our family just got bigger" line was genuinely a nice moment.
HAN :DDDD
It was also nice seeing older characters! Loved the toy car scene with Roman back-seating Tej. The Rock being sweaty all the time is stupid and borderline disgusting though. Also Gal Gadot can't act for shit and makes me gag every time I see her but otherwise that point it's a solid dumb action movie and I had fun watching it. I do wonder how much the heist would have cost irl in terms of public destruction ahah
The Shining (1980)
So this might be the third time I saw it? Something like that.
I'm not going to talk that much about this movie, it's one of the greatest for a reason and there's nothing new I could say about it.
Shelley Duvall is such a good actress in this, Jack Nicholson, good as he is at it, is deranged ever since the beginning and it's funny seeing the contrast between some of the almost normal family scenes between Wendy and Danny... and then Jack getting all up in his head on the side. Also I love how Wendy is the one doing all the damn work while he can't even write one actual page.
Aside of that aspect, I don't know, it's just a clean, almost clinical, movie that makes the viewer uncomfortable in a great way between the architecture, the shots, the music, the overall ambiance, it's just that good.
The Shining (1997)
ON THE OTHER HAND- Actually no, I didn't start watching this TV miniseries with Kubrick's movie in mind because it's something I hate doing. And it's a good way to do it, because this miniseries was pretty alright in its own way! It's not high level of cinema, but it's okay. Some really weird obvious shots, cringey delivered lines, a boiler subplot that felt almost video gamey, but I had a good time anyway.
I do like how there's a lot of the relationship between the family shown, even if there is too much of it at times. There's a lot more character progression too, even if again, it's too much here and there. Weber's Jack is pretty good! The end was kinda cute in its own way, and I liked the little twist with Danny.
Overall I'd say this whole miniseries doesn't really respect the viewer's time and their intelligence, too much is spelled out, but the relationship of the family, despite some bad dialogues, is pretty solid and saved the whole thing for me. Also, both Shining movies strive for something completely different even if horror themed, and I find it kind of stupid to compare both (even if it's obviously normal to compare them).
Goldeneye (1995)
I finally get to watch my favorite Bond movie! It's still the best I've ever seen, even if Dalton's Bond really impressed me (I've yet to see any of Craig David's tho, can't wait to watch them). But Goldeneye is just pretty damn good at everything it does. The opening is great, I love every actor (I could fangirl about any of them, like Xenia is bat shit insane and I love her for it, you can feel Natalya's trauma, Boris is such a nerd, stupid asshole, etc) and there are quite a few cult scenes that are still really cool, like the iconic scene with the tank in St Petersburg.
I really can't be objective about this movie because it's THE Bond movie for me. I also find it to be one of the easiest to follow in terms of scenario and it's just a plain good, solid movie with nice action scenes (with maybe a bit too many explosions but it's the 90s), good music, good actors, incredible Bond with Brosnan. I just love it.
Coherence (2013)
I'm not going to say much about this one because the less you know about it the better. The movie's about a bunch of friends getting together for dinner at a friend's home. This film was made on a really low budget, in the home of the producer, and it was pretty damn good. I like how claustrophobic it looks? You don't see shit outside of the main house and the characters, with a really close camera at all times. I didn't really like where the film go around the end but still had a really nice time watching it!
